About Kevin Dewalt?

Kevin Dewalt is one of the pioneers of Lean Startup, and a mentor at JFDI. He is now based in Beijing, where he ran the first Startup Weekend NEXT in China.

Kevin have 15 years experience as entrepreneur, venture capitalist and engineer.

What is Lean Startup?

The Lean Startup is a business approach coined by Eric Ries that aims to change the way that companies are built and new products are launched. The Lean Startup relies on validated learning, scientific experimentation, and iterative product releases to shorten product development cycles, measure progress, and gain valuable customer feedback. What Happened at Lean StartUp in Action

Last October 3, 2013, Scott E. Bales one of the mentors of Lean StartUp Machine gave the “Lean StartUp in Action” course at the Voyager Office in Ortigas Center. Attended by over 50+ Filipino Entrepreneurs the event served as a promise of more things to come.

According to Scott E. Bales: “Lean Startup is a field-tested philosophy that provides you with a toolset to minimize failure and increase your chances of success.” LSIA is Scott’s own application of Eric Reis’ bestseller.

Scott upon reading Eric’s book knew how powerful it was but like many, stumbled on how to implement lean startup principles in his own endeavors. Scott has been a serial entrepreneur for the past seven years and has combined his own learnings and approach to building lean startups. He has built two of his companies purely on the Lean StartUp principles – including Moven! According to Scott, Lean StartUp “is a science for transforming an idea to a functioning new business with minimal risk, wastage and learning.”

You can be anybody – an artist, a student, a designer, a public servant, an engineer… etc! The camp is open to social entrepreneurs and to those who are just considering becoming one.

Get ready for 7 days of learning, inspiration and fun!

What’s on offer?

The Changemaker Camp is dedicated to developing your creative side while offering a space to exchange, foster thinking and collaborate on ideas.

We aim to stimulate young people’s networks – to inspire and encourage creativity and provide an outlet for ideas. We believe that ideas cannot happen in isolation and collaboration via networks can bring together the right mix of people, skills and experiences needed to turn ideas into reality.

The 7 day camp will include training sessions on social enterprise, field visits and case studies of existing social enterprises and talks from social entrepreneurs in the country. The 7 day camp will be facilitated by both local and British trainers who have a wealth of knowledge and experience with young people and social enterprises.

At the end of the camp, participants are given a real world exercise on pitching their ideas to a diverse panel of judges who will decide on the 5 best social enterprise ideas. The top 5 will be given seed funding to turn those ideas into a viable social enterprise.

A total of Php 500,000 is up for grabs!

How do you join?

It’s simple. Filipinos, 18 – 28 years old, can apply as an individual or as part of a 2 member team. Teams may exceed 2 members but the camp will only accept up to 2 representatives from the team.You need to submit a 2 minute video along with a completed application form. Four myths about the Lean Startup

Myth: Lean means cheap. Lean startups try to spend as little money as possible.

Truth: The Lean Startup method is not about cost, it is about speed. Lean Startups waste less money, because they use a disciplined approach to testing new products and ideas. Lean, when used in the context of lean startup, refers to a process of building companies and products using lean manufacturing principles applied to innovation. That process involves rapid hypothesis testing, validated learning about customers, and a disciplined approach to product development.

An technology-based solution for the existing community problem

Criteria for selection:

  • Innovation: Demonstrates creativity and originality
  • Implementation Feasibility: Proposal should be executable in the given timeline and proponents should demonstrate capability to mobilize stakeholders involved
  • Impact: Provides a long-lasting solution to an existing social problem


  • The applicant must be a Filipino citizen, 18-30 years old.
  • Proposals may be submitted by individuals or a representative of an organization, company, or community.
  • The applicant must be available to attend the development forum, Shapers Lab, on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the ADB Headquarters in Ortigas, Metro Manila. Financial assistance for transportation and accommodations will be provided for non-NCR based participants.
  • The proposal should not have won in other business plan or project grant competitions of the same magnitude (national, regional, provincial or district), or have received the same amount of funding for its implementation.Proposals may be submitted by individuals or representatives of an organization, company, or community.


All participants must provide the following:

  1. A completed application form downloaded from the GLOBE Catalyst website (click here to download application form).
  2. One-minute video pitching their solution for an existing community problem. Applicants must upload the video on YouTube or Vimeo and ensure that the URL/link is provided in the application form.Guide questions:
    • What existing problem in your community do you want to solve?
    • What is your proposed ICT-based solution?
    • What kind of impact do you hope to make through your project?
  3. Photo/s showing the community you want to help and empower. You may also include links to news articles, videos, or blog entries about the community and/or your project, if already existing.

StartUp Opportunity: Launchgarage

Launchgarage is a 5 month accelerator program that guides philippine startups from the idea stage, to the build, and the launch. We’re committed to provide the much needed support and resources to early stage startups in the Philippines and we are determined to highlight filipino innovation as one of the best in the world.
The program runs for 5 months with teams exposed to training programs and workshops designed to educate on various skills and philosophies ranging from Lean Startup to business principles needed to launch and operate a successful venture in the Philippines and the region.

Seed Funding

Accepted teams receive a seed of US$ 30,000 for 15% equity in the startup.

This funding is intended as operating capital during the 5 month program to take the startups to their next major milestone.


Teams are exposed to our network of mentors composed of veteran founders, industry analysts, tech business executives, angels, and venture capitalists, both from the Philippines, and from other regions around the world.

These mentors provide general and one-on-one advice to the teams that  help refine your product and provide valuable insight on direction and viability.

Pitch Days

Throughout the program, mentors help refine your pitch. Each team is given multiple opportunities to pitch to a panel of VCs for early critiques and maybe even additional interim funding.

Network Events

We count on our various mixer activities for teams to connect with VCs, rockstars in the industry, and strategic partners that add value to the startups’ own services and products.

Demo Day

The program culminates in a final pitching day in front of a large panel of VCs, angels, and peers. This is the big show.
